Atletico wrap up deal for defender Filipe Luis

Brazilian full-back Filipe Luis has joined Atletico Madrid from Deportivo La Coruna in a deal that is reported to be worth €13.5 million.

Depor announced on Friday that the 24-year-old had been given permission to undergo a medical in the Spanish capital and the formalities of the deal have now been completed.

The signing of Filipe Luis is something of a coup for Atletico as the defender was linked with a move to Barcelona last summer.

He was also expected to be in contention for a place in Brazil's World Cup squad but suffered a broken ankle in January, ending his hopes of featuring in South Africa.

The sale of the defender will allow Depor to settle a reported debt of €4 million owed to Sergio Gonzalez. Failure to pay the outstanding wages by August 2 could have seen Depor relegated to the Segunda Division.
