Liverpool winger Riera makes Olympiakos move

Olympiakos have announced the signing of Liverpool midfielder Albert Riera on a four-year deal.

Riera, who joined Liverpool from Espanyol for a fee of £8 million in the summer of 2008, is reported to have joined the Greek giants for a fee in the region of £3.3 million.

"Olympiakos announce the acquisition of Liverpool's Spanish international Albert Riera," a statement from the Greek club read. "The player has signed a four-year agreement."

Riera enjoyed an impressive debut season at Liverpool, starting 24 games and scoring four goals in the Premier League, but the 2009-10 campaign was more difficult for the 28-year-old.

Riera was restricted to just nine league starts and spectacularly fell out with former manager Rafa Benitez in March when accusing his compatriot of ignoring him, and claiming the vendetta was "personal".

The winger also described Liverpool as a "sinking ship" and spoke of his desire to secure a move to the Russian league. Riera stayed at Anfield but never played for the Reds again.

After completing his move to Greece, Riera said: "I am eager for titles and honours. I am comfortable with my decision and I will be playing with a group hunting for trophies. I came to win titles, which are missing from my career.''

Riera is the second high-profile figure to leave Anfield this summer following Yossi Benayoun, who has joined Chelsea. He arrived in Athens to complete talks with Olympiakos on Thursday evening and was greeted by thousands of supporters.

He added: "I was told the fans were coming but what I saw was much more than I expected. I did not expect so many people, honestly. It was a surprise for me. Such enthusiasm is good for the club. I understand how important the support of the people is, it's priceless."
