Wigan complete signing of Hamilton's McArthur

Wigan have completed the signing of midfielder James McArthur from Hamilton for an undisclosed fee.

McArthur, 22, has signed a four-year contract at the DW Stadium after the Scottish Premier League club agreed to his sale earlier in the week. The Scotland Under-21 international follows the same path as fellow midfielder James McCarthy, who left Accies for Wigan in 2009.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said: ''James is a really exciting prospect and we are all delighted that he has chosen to join Wigan Athletic.

''We are building a squad here at the DW and I see James as being another real quality addition who will add great competition in the midfield areas. He is young, hungry, desperate to play for us in the Premier League and I believe he has all the attributes you need to be a success at this level.''

Martinez now hopes he can follow the example of McCarthy who, after a quiet start, made a strong impact in the second half of last season.

The Spaniard added: ''We want James to feel at home here, enjoy his football and progress his career. We have all seen how well James McCarthy adapted to life at Wigan and James McArthur has the potential to be just as impressive.

''James has played a huge amount of games for a player of his age and his desire and winning mentality will be a great asset for our squad.''

Hamilton boss Billy Reid spoke earlier in the week of his sadness at losing the player.

''I'm delighted and gutted at the same time,'' Reid said. ''I had told him a while ago that his time would come to play at that level and that time has come. He has been sensational for us and he will be sorely missed.''
