Manchester City target Landon Donovan

Manchester City look set to continue their summer spending spree as manager Roberto Mancini revealed that he is trying to sign USA international Landon Donovan.

The club have already signed David Silva, Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng for a total of over £50 million and have now targeted the former Everton winger, after he impressed in the Premier League in 2009-10.

Asked whether Donovan would be arriving at Eastlands this summer, Mancini told Sky Sports News while on the club's pre-season tour in the New York: ''We will have to see. The market is open until the end of August. It could be, because Donovan is a good player.''

Donovan, who is contracted to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy, has talked of his desire to continue playing in England, but many thought that he would return to Goodison Park for the coming season.

In fact, City have now jumped to the top of the queue and reportedly sent a scout to watch Donovan in all four games that the American played during the World Cup.

However, City could have a hard time prising him away from the Galaxy, with Major League Soccer bosses making it clear they have no intention of selling the league's biggest homegrown name.
