Flamengo president Patricia Amorim has said captain Bruno will never play for the team again even if he is found not to be involved in the disappearance of his former girlfriend.
Bruno has spent the past 10 days in custody after being accused of kidnapping and injuring his missing ex-girlfriend last year.
Police have named Bruno as the main suspect in the disappearance and suspected murder of Eliza Samudio, and Amorim claims that even if the goalkeeper is declared innocent he will have no future with the club.
"Bruno will not play any more here,'' she told news magazine Epoca. "He cannot. He has destroyed the brand and image of the club too much. And his behaviour is unacceptable.
"He always had inappropriate reactions, took on the position of captain as if he could order everyone about, as if he was the owner of the truth. He got out of hand.''
Police have yet to find Samudio, who had been trying to prove Bruno was the father of her son before her disappearance at the beginning of June. Bruno, 25, is in prison facing charges from an alleged incident last October.
According to the Ministry for Public Justice, Bruno and a friend are suspected of kidnapping Samudio, who was then five months pregnant, in an attempt to force her to abort the then unborn child. Amorim has received legal advice and said Flamengo are planning to dismiss Bruno.
"The first thing we did was to distance ourselves immediately, even before he was arrested,'' she said. "But we could not forbid him from training away from the others, before he was indicted.
"Then we suspended his payment because he is not providing the service for which he was engaged. We wondered how we would be able to terminate his contract, just cause or not. We discussed it for two nights. We didn't reach a unanimous decision.
"To terminate his contract without just cause, Flamengo would have to pay six million euros. I could not be irresponsible, act with passion, and say 'send him away' and risk harming the club.
"Precisely because I do not have legal expertise, I gathered a board of important people to discuss and reach a conclusion. They have just recommended to me the termination of Bruno's contract for just cause.''
Bruno has made over 200 appearance for Flamengo, one of Brazil's biggest teams and the reigning league champions.
