Hodgson coy on Cole

Roy Hodgson has confirmed he has spoken to Joe Cole but played down talk he is on the verge of joining Liverpool.

Cole is available on a free transfer after leaving Chelsea and has been most strongly linked with Tottenham and Arsenal, but the odds have now shortened on a move to Anfield.

Asked about the situation, Hodgson told Sky Sports News: "I'm not a betting man, so that doesn't actually play a big part for me.

"As far as I know, Joe Cole is still a player looking for a club. I know we've been connected with him and that's good to know - that we've been connected with players of that quality.

"I had a very brief chat with him a little while back but, if you want to know about transfer targets, you'll have to ask [Liverpool managing director] Christian Purslow."
