England plan to groom homegrown coaches

England boss Fabio Capello and director of football development Sir Trevor Brooking will identify young English coaches to bring into the the national team fold, with the likes of Alan Shearer, Gareth Southgate, Paul Ince and Tony Adams sure to be under immediate consideration.

• Full-scale England review to study Spain camp
• Heskey quits England

A major review of England's disappointing World Cup showing took place at the Club England and FA executive board meetings on Thursday, with one of the main outcomes the idea to potentially groom the next England manager form a select group of candidates described as "young English coaches."

An FA source informed Soccernet: "There were very lengthy discussions about the World Cup and a major review will be undertaken, but it was also decided that Fabio Capello and Sir Trevor Brooking will work together to identify the opportunities for further young English coaches to support the set up.

"The initial discussions took place between the five members of the club England Board and were then referred to the full FA Executive who gave the go-ahead to action this proposal."

Former England captain Shearer has coached hometown club Newcastle United, albeit for a short spell, while Southgate has managerial experience with Middlesbrough under his belt, though he had been working as a TV pundit of late.

Adams is presently coaching in Azerbaijan, Ince managed Premier League side Blackburn Rovers - after successful tenures at Macclesfield and MK Dons, while former Portsmouth defender Noel Blake has successfully cut his teeth with the England Under-19s.

David Beckham stressed on Wednesday that he is not interested in moving into management, but the possibility of eventually being part of an England set-up alongside an experienced coach might entice the former Three Lions captain into a role with the national team.

Stuart Pearce will remain as one of Capello's coaches, but because of his Under-21 duties, there will now be room for at least one up and coming young English coach who could be groomed to eventually take the hot seat when Capello's contract expires after the European Championships.
