Bayern Munich have confirmed they have made an approach for Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel.
Van der Wiel, 22, was first choice right back for the Netherlands as they marched to the World Cup final in South Africa, sparking speculation a move to a bigger league was on the cards this summer.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed the approach but suggested the German champions would not pay over the odds for the defender.
"We are looking at things now and will discuss them again with the coach," Rummenigge said. "Theoretically, we have until August 31. Sometimes one has to pursue things with great calm so that they don't become too expensive."
Bayern full back Philipp Lahm is regarded as one of the best right backs in the world, although if the transfer is completed, the versatile Lahm or Van der Wiel could be employed at left back where young defender Holger Badstuber, a natural centre back, was used last season.
