Paatelainen appointed Kilmarnock boss

Mixu Paatelainen has been confirmed as the new manager of Kilmarnock.

Paatelainen, 43, met the media at Rugby Park on Wednesday afternoon where he was announced as successor to Jimmy Calderwood, who left at the end of the season.

Paatelainen has been out of football since leaving Hibernian in May 2009.

The Finn will have to work under the same budget cuts which led to Calderwood's refusal to return following a short spell as boss at the end of last season.

Killie chairman Michael Johnston reportedly spoke to a host of candidates including Gus MacPherson, Malcolm Crosby, Alex Rae, Lawrie McKinna and former Hearts bosses John Robertson and Csaba Laszlo.

German World Cup winner Thomas Hassler withdrew his application on family grounds, while compensation ruled out a move for first target, the Blackburn coach Steve Kean.

Prior to his 16-month spell in charge at Easter Road, Paatelainen managed TPS in his homeland and Cowdenbeath before his spell at Hibs.

"I'm delighted to be manager of Kilmarnock Football Club," Paatelainen said. "I was desperate to get back into football and I look forward to it. I missed the training ground and the adrenaline."
