Novo excited by Liga chance

Former Rangers striker Nacho Novo is excited by the challenge of playing in Spain's Primera Division with Sporting Gijon.

Novo spent nine years in Scotland with Raith Rovers, Dundee and Rangers, where he spent the last six seasons and won a string of trophies, including three league titles and two Scottish Cups.

But the 31-year-old has never played in Spain's top flight, having started out in the country's third tier at Huesca, and the Galicia-born forward is looking forward to the challenge of playing at the highest level in Spain.

"I want to demonstrate many things to myself in this first opportunity I have of playing in the Primera Division in Spain," he said at his official presentation. "But the Sporting squad will help me a lot with that."

Novo does not see the move to Sporting as a step down but instead sees comparisons between the two clubs.

"Sporting have no reason to envy Rangers," he said. "This is a big club with a football culture, of attacking, similar to that of Rangers. The two sets of fans are similar as well. Sporting is a legend in the world of football."

Sporting are set to take advantage of Novo's popularity in Scotland by selling official club shirts with the player's name on the back in Glasgow.
