Hughes: James the perfect choice for Pompey

Richard Hughes says goalkeeper David James is the players' choice to replace Avram Grant and manage Portsmouth in the Championship next season.

Grant resigned from his post last week and is expected to be named as West Ham's new manager, meaning Portsmouth are searching for a new boss to take charge of the financially-stricken club.

James, who has been named in England's preliminary World Cup squad, has put his own name forward and Hughes feels his colleague could successfully combine the twin roles of playing and coaching.

"Jamo ticks all the right boxes and would be the logical solution," Hughes told the Daily Mirror. "He has the respect of the players and his appointment would be well received.

"Jamo is the fans' favourite and I know other players feel the way I do about him. With proper backing he would give us continuity and combine the roles of player and manager. If we are looking for someone to take this club into a new era I cannot think of anyone better."

However, administrator Andrew Andronikou recently stated it was unlikely James would take over due to his lack of experience in the field of management.

"David has expressed an interest in taking the next stage of his career into management," Andronikou said. "Albeit we believe it has come a bit too early to appoint him as manager."
