Nelsen open to future A-League move

Blackburn Rovers captain Ryan Nelsen has opened the door to a future move to the A-League, and insisted that many of Australia's "golden generation" are likely to return to their homeland to finish their careers.

Nelsen admitted he has been keenly watching the evolution of the competition, and has been impressed with how it has developed since its inception in 2004.

And the New Zealand skipper refused to rule out a move to Wellington Pheonix to play under All Whites coach Ricki Herbert, providing he is still able to play after seeing out the final two years of his contract with Blackburn.

"I've still got two years left at Blackburn but after that, maybe," Nelsen said. "I'm not sure how much more will be left in the legs after that. A lot of Australian players have gone back and done really well.

The A-League was not in place when Nelsen's career began and the defender moved from New Zealand to the USA to pursue his football career through the American college system, before ebding up at MLS side DC United.

But Nelsen thinks that Australasia's premier competition has improved drmatically and that more players will be returning to play in the league - though more likely as a swansong to their careers.

"It's great for both countries," Nelsen said. "It's exciting for the A-League (if players return home). Hopefully some of our players come back as well and this league will improve."
