Birmingham back in for N'Zogbia

Birmingham City have made an improved offer for Wigan Athletic winger Charles N'Zogbia after an initial bid of £8 million was rejected.

Blues' opening offer fell well short of Wigan's £15 million valuation, although N'Zogbia's agent, Franck Peslerbe, remained optimistic a deal could still be done.

"Everything depends on Wigan and if they accept a bid then things can go forward," Peslerbe said. "Wigan have a figure they expect for Charles and we will see if anyone meets that."

It is unclear by how much Birmingham's second offer has been increased.

N'Zogbia, who joined Wigan from Newcastle United in January 2009 for a reported £6 million, scored seven goals in an impressive season for the Latics.

Meanwhile, Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt has signed a new contract to keep him at the club for another season.

Pollitt played just once after Vladimir Stojkovic arrrival on loan from Sporting Lisbon in January - the disastrous 8-0 defeat at Chelsea on the final day of the season - but manager Roberto Martinez wants the veteran around next season.

"Mike is a terrific goalkeeper first and foremost with great experience, and he continues to set standards on a daily basis that the younger players can follow," said the Latics boss.

"He has been patient during his time at the club, but has never been anything less than totally professional and committed to the club. He is also an infectious character who is great to have around the dressing room and we are all delighted to have him back."
