Ronaldo nets winner for Corinthians
Ronaldo scored a late winner as Corinthians kicked off the Campeonato Brasileiro with a 2-1 victory over nine-man Atletico Paranaense.
Wagner Diniz gave the visitors the lead on the stroke of half-time, four minutes after Paulo Baier had been sent off. Rodrigo Souza levelled on the hour mark but, after Murara Neto also received his marching orders, Ronaldo scored from the spot with seven minutes remaining.
Elsewhere, Rio de Janeiro state champions Botafogo and Sao Paulo counterparts Santos shared the spoils in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Flamengo were also forced to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw with Sao Paulo, while Atletico Goianiense were held to a goalless draw at home to Gremio.
Avai enjoyed a great start to the season as they trounced Gremio Prudente 6-1, with Emerson recording a hat-trick. There were 1-0 victories for Palmeiras, Ceara and Guarani over Vitoria, Fluminense and Goias respectively.
Internacional slumped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Cruzeiro while Atletico Mineiro triumphed by the same scoreline against Vasco.
