Emery extends Valencia stay

Valencia coach Unai Emery has agreed to continue coaching Los Chenext season, after accepting an offer to extend his contract with the club.

Emery's deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign, but after leading his side to a place in the Champions League for the first time in three years, he has been asked to stay on at the Mestalla.

"I am very grateful for the appreciation shown for our work and for the fact that we are staying on," Emery said.

Valenica are guranteed to finish third in La Liga, though they are 24 points behind second-place Real Madrid in the table, and also reached the semi-finals of the Europa League before losing out to Atletico Madrid.

But Emery, who took over from previous boss Ronald Koeman in 2008, will likely have his work cut out repeating Valencia's success next season, as star players David Villa and David Silva appear likely to leave the club this summer.

Neither Emery nor the club gave any details of the length of the contract extension, though earlier reports suggested it would be for one year.
