Marseille clinch title after Rennes victory

Marseille clinched the Ligue 1 title for the first time since 1992 with a 3-1 win at home to Rennes.

The Mediterranean outfit began the match under pressure after Auxerre's earlier defeat at Lyon put them in the driving seat knowing victory would secure the trophy.

They delivered in style when it mattered, with defender Gabriel Heinze giving them an lead and even when Jimmy Briand equalised, Didier Deschamps' side kept their cool to win with goals by captain Mamadou Niang and midfielder Lucho Gonzalez to spark joyous scenes of celebrations at the Stade Vélodrome.

Auxerre had paved the way for Marseille's title win by losing 2-1 at Lyon. Despite taking the lead through Ireneusz Jelen in the 15th minute, Auxerre - who headed into the match in second place - left the Stade Gerland empty-handed as goals by Lisandro Lopez and Miralem Pjanic secured Les Gones the win.

At the bottom, Boulogne's one-season stay in Ligue 1 was ended by a 1-0 loss to St Etienne. Les Verts' triumph, courtesy of Emmanuel Riviere's 86th-minute strike, ensured their own survival and also condemned Le Mans to the drop.

Le Mans' five-year stay in the top flight was also ended as defeat at Nancy ensured they were relegated to Ligue 2, with Chris Malonga's winner securing a 3-2 win for the home side.

Lille moved up to second place in the table as goals from Yohan Cabaye and Ludovic Obraniak saw them to a comfortable 2-0 victory at Toulouse.

Rudi Garcia's side had to overcome a difficult start in the south-west but eventually prevailed to move above Auxerre on goal difference.

Bordeaux's woeful conclusion to their season continued as their 1-1 draw at Nice all but ended Les Girondins' bid for the Champions League.

Emerse Fa opened the scoring in the 26th minute for the hosts and, although Bordeaux piled on the pressure following Wendel's equaliser seven minutes later, Laurent Blanc's side could not find the winner.

Montpellier kept pace in the race for a Europa League spot as Alberto Costa's goal helped them to a 1-0 victory at Sochaux in Ligue 1.

A superb cross from Garry Bocaly picked out the Argentinian midfielder, and he made no mistake with a simple header.

Lorient twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Monaco but it was not enough to keep their slim Europa League hopes alive.

Morgan Amalfitano cancelled out Haruna Lukman's opener late in the first half and Kevin Gameiro brought them level again after Ouwo Moussa Maazou had restored Monaco's lead.

Lens forward Toifilou Maoulida struck a second-half equaliser to deny already-relegated Grenoble what would have been only their second away win. Laurent Courtois had put the visitors ahead and also missed a second-half penalty.

Mateja Kezman's stoppage-time strike was not enough for Paris St Germain to celebrate their Coupe de France success with victory, as Valenciennes' Fahid Ben Khalfallah netted a last-gasp leveller to draw 2-2 in a sensational finish to the encounter at Parc des Princes.
