Tevez too important to leave, says Bellamy

Craig Bellamy has warned Manchester City that they must keep hold of unsettled striker Carlos Tevez if they want to compete with the world's elite.

• Mancini tells Tevez to leave if unhappy

Tevez publicly criticised Roberto Mancini's training methods last week and the manager responded by saying the club's leading scorer could leave if he wanted to.

But in the build up to Wednesday night's fourth place showdown clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Bellamy insisted that keeping Tevez at Eastlands was as important as qualifying for the Champions League.

"Carlos is the one who epitomises what Manchester City should be all about," Bellamy told the Daily Mirror. "He is a warrior. For me, it's not a question of if he stays. He has to stay. It's as simple as that.

"Everyone is speculating about the world's best players coming here if we qualify for the Champions League. And when those players look at City, the first player they study is Tevez to see what he is doing here.

"He has got the same kind of stature as them and they want to see if he is doing well."

Tevez, who quit Manchester United after falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has already been linked with a move to Real Madrid and if City fail to qualify for the Champions League the 26-year-old's future could be in serious doubt.

But on the eve of City's clash with Spurs, Tevez is willing to forget his feud with Mancini and has come out in support of the city boss.

"Of course I would really like him to continue here," Tevez told The Sun. "I would like all of us to stay and continue with this ambitious project which we have started.

"The manager has given me the continuity that every player needs to produce his best. He helped me recover my confidence.

"Thanks to the coach and my team-mates, things have worked well for me this season and it's the reason I have achieved such a high level."
