Rangers boss Walter Smith believes Jose Mourinho's success with Inter Milan suggests the critics are wrong to dismiss his 'pragmatic' approach.
Rangers have long been criticised for their defensive tactics, but Smith is again celebrating the SPL title while Celtic are a distant second.
Mourinho was widely hailed as a tactical genius after guiding Inter to success over Barcelona this week, and Smith feels Rangers deserve more credit.
"I think I've always had a pragmatic attitude to the game, like Mourinho," he said in the Daily Record. "He has always built from a solid base and been highly successful at the same time.
"Chelsea used the same cautious approach, home and away, when they played Barcelona in the Champions League and nobody batted an eyelid. But when Rangers set out to play in an identical manner, we were heavily criticised.
"I could point out that when Chelsea and Inter were playing that way it was a tactical approach designed to look for victory. When I did it with Rangers it was to avoid defeat."
