Boateng blames Brown for Hull failures

Hull City midfielder George Boateng has blamed Phil Brown - and his infamous team-talk last season - for the club's impending relegation. Brown may return as Hull boss
Forum: Where did it go wrong for relegated clubs?

Hull are all but certain to return to the Championship next season after a defeat to Sunderland left them needing six points and a 23-goal swing to overtake West Ham in their final two games.

Chairman Adam Pearson brought Iain Dowie to the club with nine games remaining to try to spark a revival but, having taken four points from his seven games to date, the attempt looks to have failed and it appears Brown may be brought back from gardening leave at the end of the season.

Boateng, though, says Brown did not have the support of the team and feels he is to blame for the club's failures.

"I am angry inside," he said. "I do believe there have been big, big errors. From a players' point of view, when the new staff came in, it gave us a bit of hope because, before Iain Dowie came in, the team was not together.

"It wasn't behind Phil Brown. It was very difficult because some of the players feared Phil Brown and some felt a lot under pressure under Phil Brown. Therefore they lacked the performances.

"Iain Dowie and his staff have done a tremendous job. It's just a shame and it hurts me we have only collected four points under Iain because they gave the team more belief and respect for themselves."

Brown held his half-time team-talk on the pitch as Hull trailed Manchester City 4-0 last season, and Boateng added: "I can take you back to December a year-and-a-half ago, when we played at Manchester City. That's when the problems started.

"The team felt disrespected that day. The team didn't feel appreciated. We were sixth in the league and we had lost two consecutive games. We didn't feel like we deserved to be treated like that. We were treated like a bunch of kids.

"It had an effect on me and all the players. We covered it up by saying it didn't affect us, but it did and it took a long time to recover. Then after losing at Liverpool, Phil Brown sacked the whole canteen people for a week.

"We were not fed for a week. We had to train there with no food and then after training, drive and go and get food from a petrol station.

"Those things don't help - they affect the team. We didn't feel appreciated by the manager. We were not together enough."

Meanwhile, striker Jozy Altidore has apologised to Hull supporters for the head-butt on Sunderland's Alan Hutton that led to his dismissal.

"I'm so sorry about yesterday [Saturday]," he wrote on Twitter. "Made a stupid, immature and costly mistake. I apologize to hull city and the fans who I let down. I let my emotions get the best of me and lost my composure. Believe it or not this year playing for hull was to date the best trip I've ever been on."
