Magnificent seven takes Chelsea top

Salomon Kalou scored a hat-trick as Chelsea stormed back to the top of the Premier League following a 7-0 slaughter of Stoke City at Stamford Bridge.

A brace from Frank Lampard, including a penalty, and late goals from substitute Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda added to Kalou's hat-trick and maintained Chelsea's dream of winning a League and FA Cup double this season.

Stoke were rocked by the loss of goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen who was stretchered off with a suspected fractured elbow as he attempted to deny Kalou from scoring Chelsea's second. He is now set to miss out on this summer's World Cup finals with Denmark.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard scored a second-half brace as the Reds confirmed Burnley's relegation from the Premier League with a 4-0 victory at Turf Moor.

With two matches to play the Clarets cannot now catch 17th-placed West Ham United and return to the Championship after just one season in the top flight.

Gerrard's double, Maxi Rodriguez's first goal for Liverpool and a late effort from Ryan Babel keeps the Reds in the hunt for fourth place, just two points behind Tottenham, who have played one game less.

James Milner scored a late penalty to keep Aston Villa in the hunt for a Champions League spot with a 1-0 derby win over Birmingham City at Villa Park.

The England midfielder converted from the spot in the 83rd minute after Blues defender Roger Johnson had been adjudged to have brought down Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Villa have secured a place in next season's Europe League at the very least, but Martin O'Neill's side are now level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham, having played a game more and with an inferior goal difference.

A last-gasp penalty from Mikel Arteta kept Everton's slim hopes of Europa League football on the boil with a 2-1 win against a second-string Fulham side.

With Thursday's second leg of Fulham's semi-final against Hamburg in mind, boss Roy Hodgson made nine changes for this game, coming within seconds of ending a run of 16 successive defeats at Goodison Park.

Although Erik Nevland gave Fulham a 36th-minute lead against the run of play, Victor Anichebe hauled Everton level five minutes after his arrival as a half-time sub before Arteta stroked home a face-saving winner deep into injury time.
