Blackburn target Lewandowski cancels trip to UK

The volcanic ash from Iceland that has grounded all flights in and out of the UK could cost Blackburn dear in the race to sign Polish striker Robert Lewandowski.

The forward, who plays for Polish side Lech Poznan, was due to jet into the country on Saturday to watch Rovers' game with Everton but has been forced to cancel the trip as the fall out from a volcanic eruption in Iceland continues.

All flights within the affected zone have been grounded due to concerns about the damage the ash could do to plane engines. Rovers were hopeful of hosting Lewandowski as they took on the Toffees, as they battle with Genoa and Borussia Dortmund to sign the highly rated forward.

It is believed a bid of around £4 million will be enough to sign the 22-year-old, who made a similar trip to watch Genoa's derby clash with Sampdoria in Italy last week. "He got the invitation [from Blackburn], but due to the cancellation of the flights he could not go, and it makes no sense to drive," Lewandowski's agent, Cezary Kucharski, said.

German side Dortmund have signalled their interest but maintain they cannot afford to become embroiled in a bidding war. "We think Lewandowski would be served by moving to Borussia," Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke said. "But we have no chance if his club think about only getting the highest fee."
