Wenger tells Spurs they must beat Chelsea

Arsene Wenger has told Tottenham that they must beat Chelsea on Saturday to prove they are good enough to play in the Champions League.

Spurs moved to within one point of fourth-placed Manchester City on Wednesday night as they beat Arsenal 2-1 at White Hart Lane, all but ending the Gunners' hopes of winning the title this season.

Tottenham face a difficult run-in with games against Chelsea, Manchester United and City still to come and, while the victory in the North London derby keeps them in contention, Wenger feels they must now prove they can deliver on a regular basis.

Asked if Spurs were good enough for the Champions League, he said: "There are many teams good enough in England. That is the problem for Spurs. If I asked after the Portsmouth game, you would say no. If I ask you the opinion after tonight's game, you would say yes. Top-level sport is about consistency."

Wenger admitted there is "too much to do now" in the title race as they look to close a six-point gap on leaders Chelsea in their final four games but will hope Spurs can do Arsenal a favour or two in their remaining games.

"Chelsea play Tottenham on Saturday," he said. "If Tottenham want to fight for the Champions League, they can show they have the quality to do it."

He added: "If you look at the game last night [Chelsea's 1-0 win over Bolton], I don't think Chelsea were exceptional but they had the luck in the game that you have seen as well as I have."

Harry Redknapp believes victory over Chelsea remains possible after victory over Arsenal restored confidence lost in the successive defeats against Sunderland and, in the FA Cup, Portsmouth.

"I said to the players if we could beat Arsenal we could still get fourth place," he said. "It's still going to be hard but we're right in there and this will give us a big lift now for Chelsea on Saturday.

"It will be another difficult game against a strong team but on the back of this we will go into it with a bit of confidence. We are in great form with six wins in the last seven in the league. The crowd will be with us again as they were tonight so it's a game to look forward to."
