Ref Dean and assistant demoted to Championship

Premier League referee Mike Dean has been demoted to the Championship to take charge of Bristol City's home game against Swansea on Saturday, after his erratic display in Manchester United's 2-1 defeat by Chelsea.

Dean and assistant referee Simon Beck were criticised by Sir Alex Ferguson for their "poor, poor performance" as Didier Drogba was clearly offside for Chelsea's second goal and have now been taken out of the firing line this weekend.

The pair also missed a clear penalty for each side and Dean allowed Federico Macheda's goal to stand, rather than awarding a handball, but he was already under the microscope for his performance in Burnley's 1-0 defeat by Blackburn Rovers the previous weekend.

Burnley boss Brian Laws was vocal in his criticism, claiming that Dean had been "conned" into awarding a match-winning penalty when Martin Olsson went down without being touched and maintained Dean's subsequent appointment for the match at Old Trafford was "mad".

After the loss to Chelsea, Ferguson said: "When I saw it was Mike Dean I did worry, I have to say."

Dean, a member of the elite group of FIFA referees since 2002, will be the fourth official for Wigan Athletic's game against Portsmouth at the DW Stadium on Wednesday, April 14.
