Javier Clemente takes over at Real Valladolid

Former Spain boss Javier Clemente has been confirmed as the new coach of Primera Liga strugglers Real Valladolid.

• Real Valladolid sack Onesimo

The experienced Clemente has been appointed until the end of the season and replaces Onesimo, who was sacked on Monday. The 60-year-old will take charge of the team for the first time in Saturday's clash at fellow strugglers Tenerife.

"Javier Clemente is the new coach of Real Valladolid," read a statement on the club website. "The Basque coach came in Tuesday morning to Valladolid and after meeting with [club president] Carlos Suarez sealed his commitment to the institution [for the] remainder of the season."

Clemente brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having made his name as a coach with Athletic Bilbao in the early 1980s, where he won two La Liga titles and the Spanish cup.

He was subsequently coach of the Spanish national team between 1992 and 1998, leading his country in two World Cup campaigns and at Euro 96, and also had spells in charge of Atletico Madrid, Real Betis, Real Sociedad, Marseille, Tenerife, Real Murcia and the Serbian national team.

Valladolid lost 2-0 to Villarreal and 3-0 to basement boys Xerez in their past two games to slip seven points adrift of safety with eight games to go.

Onesimo only took over from Jose Luis Mendilibar at the start of February but was unable to guide them towards safety, winning just one game.
