Bayern focus on Rooney

Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery believes Wayne Rooney is "carrying" Manchester United and stopping the striker is key to getting a result against Tuesday's visitors to the Allianz Arena.

• Bayern v Man United: All the banter
• Man United "should be scared"
• Rooney and Rio passed fit
• Bayern face nervous wait on Robben
• Bidwell: Robben interview

Ribery will provide Bayern's main threat with fellow winger Arjen Robben expected to be out injured and the French international is looking forward to his clash with Rooney in Munich.

"He's having a tremendous season and I am happy for him. He's a player I like a lot," Ribery told The Sun. "Rooney is carrying the United team this season. We must pay great attention to him."

"He's hungry. He gives everything for his team. He will tackle, he defends, he attacks, he scores goals. He's full of confidence."

Ribery added: "The whole world sees us losing but I think we have a great chance. We have a team good enough to believe in."

Bayern manager Louis Van Gaal has also singled out Rooney as United's main threat but is confident his team can shackle the striker, who has scored 33 goals so far this season for United.

Van Gaal said: "He is hard to mark out of the game. But we can manage as we also have quality. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and his players should be scared of that. I never have fear and my players don't have any fear either."

Ferguson is looking forward to locking horns with his opposite number and is relishing his first visit to the Allianz Arena to face Bayern.

United's previous three trips to Munich were all to the equally glamorous Olympic Stadium, in the days before Bayern took up residence in their futuristic new home, built for the 2006 World Cup.

"I have always dreamed about being involved in Europe,'' Ferguson said. "When I first went into European football with Aberdeen, we played Real Madrid in the Cup Winners' Cup final in 1983. That was the start of the dream.

"We played Bayern in the quarter-final that year and Liverpool on one occasion. They were nights you wanted to have all your life.

"When they changed the old format of the European Cup to the Champions League, (it was) all the best teams. You always hoped to play against the likes of Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern.

"They are all in the tournament now. We have got our cake and everyone who is involved in Europe is eating it.''

And Ferguson admitted there is certainly a wariness inside the United camp, merely because of the history they are facing.

"I respect Bayern Munich,'' he said. "I have great admiration for them as a club. That is what we are playing. We are playing history. A team with history has a certain pride and we have to remember that.''
