Nurnberg punished for crowd trouble

Bundesliga side Nurnberg will be allowed to sell only a limited number of tickets for their away games in Freiburg and Hamburg after their supporters caused trouble at a recent match against Bochum.

Eight fans were injured when fireworks and flares were lit inside the visiting supporters' block prior to the Bundesliga fixture at the Ruhr Stadion and the German Football Association (DFB) has taken action by restricting the number of tickets sold to away fans for their next two matches.

The club has also been ordered to pay a fine of 100,000 euros.

"We have accepted the judgement as it is and will not be appealing," said Nurnberg's director of sport Martin Bader on his club's website.

"The economic damage and the lack of support hurt us a lot, but it is important that at least some of our fans will be given the chance to support the team away from home in our relegation battle."

Tickets to enter Freiburg's Dreisamstadion and the HSV-Arena will only be available in seating areas for Nurnberg fans and not in the terraces where standing is usually permitted.

The Bavarian club is now looking to recoup some of the fine by pinpointing the trouble makers and making them account for their damage "as long as they are positively identified as part of the investigation," according to Bader.

Meanwhile, Cologne fans have been banned from attending next month's Bundesliga match away to Hoffenheim following persistent crowd trouble.

The German FA's disciplinary committee ruled Cologne supporters will not be allowed to attend the game on April 10, while the club have to compensate Hoffenheim for the loss of ticket revenue. The DFB also fined Cologne, who have accepted both punishments, 30,000 euros.

"We have agreed with this and have therefore have avoided the worst-case scenario of a partial or complete exclusion of our fans from home games," Cologne general manager Michael Meier told the club's official website.

The DFB highlighted five away matches in the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal between October 2009 and February 2010 in which "among other things pyrotechnics like firecrackers and flares" were set alight among the Cologne fans.

The matches were against Borussia Monchengladbach, Hertha Berlin, Bochum, Bayer Leverkusen and in the cup against FC Augsburg.
