Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll faces an internal club investigation after an alleged training ground brawl left Steven Taylor with a broken jaw.
The club have refused to comment on the story, which has been widely reported across Tuesday morning's press. Taylor was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary to have his injuries assessed, and is said to have needed surgery.
Striker Carroll also needed hospital treatment for a hand injury after the battle at Newcastle's Little Benton training ground on Sunday. And it is now feared that centre-back Taylor will miss the rest of the season having only just returned to fitness after injury.
Carroll was also reported to have tussled with Charles N'Zogbia last season prior to his sale to Wigan Athletic.
"The alleged altercation is believed to have taken place inside Newcastle United's training complex," reported BBC Radio 5 Live. "And the former England under-21 captain [Taylor] has stayed overnight in hospital for the last two nights.
"The news is certainly an unwelcome distraction at such a critical stage of the campaign and a broken jaw will mean the end of Taylor's season."
