Laudrup: Bendtner still has much to learn

Nicklas Bendtner may have scored a headline-grabbing hat-trick as Arsenal beat Porto 5-0 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, but he still has much to learn, according to Danish legends Brian and Michael Laudrup.

Bendtner failed to convert from a host of opportunities in Arsenal's Premier League win over Burnley last weekend and was taunted by some fans that his shirt number, 52, represented how many chances he needed to score.

The Danish international's three goals against Porto went some way to silencing his critics but the Laudrups believe it's not just his finishing that Bendtner needs to work on.

"He did ok. He got on the scoresheet and that is important with so many great players to compete with," Brian Laudrup told Danish TV channel 3+. "But he is not suddenly the best striker in the world because of three goals and he certainly needs to work on his first touch."

The Laudrups both enjoyed trophy-laden careers and Michael, considered one of the best Danish footballers of all time, agrees that Bendtner has a long way to go before he can be considered a top striker.

"There is an area where Bendtner needs to improve and that is his first touch. He loses possession much too often," Michael Laudrup explained.

"It's all about training, training, training. You can't get around it. Nobody knows how far he can go but it is important that he stays at Arsenal and then we will see how far he can take it next year."

Bendtner has been called upon to lead the line this season due to an injury crisis at Arsenal but has scored just three goals in 16 Premier League games. The 22-year-old's hat-trick, which came in the Champions League, is the first of his professional career.
