Portsmouth release Dusko Tosic

Portsmouth have confirmed that Serbian defender Dusko Tosic has left the club just weeks after signing on a free transfer from Werder Bremen.

Tosic, 25, arrived to strengthen Portsmouth's defensive options in February after a transfer embargo placed on the club was lifted.

The defender was named as an unused substitute in Portsmouth's 4-1 victory over local rivals Southampton in the FA Cup on February 13 but he was unable to play in the Premier League due to a new embargo, relating to non-payment to clubs.

With Portsmouth unable to field the player, coach Paul Groves admitted the only sensible course of action was to release Tosic from his contract.

"There was no point in Tosic continuing," Groves told the Portsmouth News. "It was a shame. He came in and trained with us and started to get used to us. I suppose he's one of the victims of the [financial] situation."

Meanwhile, Portsmouth have sent midfielder Hassan Yebda to a specialist in an attempt to ascertain the severity of a knee injury sustained on international duty with Algeria. It is feared Yebda could miss the remainder of the season.

Groves added: "Hassan has gone to see a specialist about a knee issue and once everything comes back we'll get the full up-to-date scenario."
