Italian Football Federation president criticises ref
Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete has hit out at the officials in charge of Fiorentina's Champions League tie at Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Referee Tom Henning Ovrebo, who was criticised after Chelsea's exit from the competition last season, came under fire along with his assistants after a series of controversial decisions during Bayern's 2-1 win.
And Abete has now suggested UEFA should not have put Ovrebo and his assistants in charge of the match as they were not up to the required standard.
"Last night we all saw the wickedness that was evident and you all know what I am talking about," he told La Repubblica. "A grave error has been committed at this stage of the Champions League and it weighs heavily.
"What worries me the most is the level of quality in the preparation of referees for such big games. The game was conditioned by the referee and his assistants, who were not up to the standard."
Miroslav Klose was some distance offside when he scored the winning goal and Abete said: "The error is a bad one because we are talking about metres, not centimetres."
