Estudiantes open title defence in style

Mauro Boselli hit a hat-trick as Estudiantes opened the defence of their Copa Libertadores title with a 5-1 win over Juan Aurich on Thursday. Boselli opened the scoring for the Argentinians from the spot after six minutes, with Luis Tejada levelling for the Peruvian side after 33 minutes.

German Re restored the lead, however, and the visitors had Roberto Guizasola sent off before half-time to enhance Estudiantes' chances. Boselli scored twice early in the second half before Leandro Gonzalez completed the rout in the 89th minute.

Elsewhere, Uruguay's Nacional came from behind to beat Ecuador's Deportivo Cuenca 3-2. Luis Miguel Escalada scored twice for the visitors, but Mario Regueiro hit a double and Angel Morales converted an 85th-minute spot kick for the winners.

In Group One, Colombia's Independiente Medellin drew 1-1 with Cerro Porteno. Felipe Pardo put Independiente in front, but Cesar Ramirez equalised for Cerro Porteno.

Peru's Universitario beat Bolivia's Blooming 2-1 in Group Four, with Carlos Orejuela and Rodolfo Espinoza on target for the victors.
