Onesimo takes reins from Mandilibar at Valladolid

Real Valladolid have sacked coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, the club have confirmed.

Sunday night's draw against relegation rivals Almeria left Valladolid just one point above the drop zone and the club have won only three times in their past 31 league games.

Club president Carlos Suarez announced the decision as they unveiled latest signing Asier del Horno and also revealed that reserve team coach Onesimo would take over first-team duties.

A statement on the club website read: "Jose Luis Mendilibar is not Real Valladolid coach any more. President Carlos Suarez announced the sad decision on Monday morning, a day after the draw against Almeria.

"Onesimo, until now the reserve coach, will be his replacement. The new coach will take his first training session on Tuesday, after which he will be presented to the media.

"The decision is sad for the club because Mendilibar is a professional who is much loved at the Zorrilla, as much for his human side as for his outstanding work since he took charge of the team.

"But the club decided to look for drastic solutions to combat a negative run of results which is continuing to stretch.

"Jose Luis Mendilibar is going, but his time at Valladolid leaves a profound stamp on the club. The name Mendilibar has been etched in capital letters in the club's history.''

Mendilibar had been in charge of Valladolid since the summer of 2006 and guided them to a historic promotion in his first year which saw them smash all second division records.

Not only did they become the first team to record 88 points, eight more than their nearest challengers, but they also achieved the earliest ever promotion when they secured their top-flight status in April after going a record 29 games unbeaten.

He guided them to safety in their two top-flight campaigns but the club have now decided to let the 48-year-old go.

Mendilibar becomes the seventh coach to lose his job in the Primera Division this season following yesterday's dismissal of Villarreal boss Ernesto Valverde and the departures of Abel Resino (Atletico Madrid), Juan Carlos Mandia (Racing Santander), Marcelino Garcia Toral (Real Zaragoza), Hugo Sanchez (Almeria) and Jose Angel Ziganda (Xerez).
