Spurs confirm Kaboul signing

Tottenham have confirmed they have reached agreement with Portsmouth to sign defender Younes Kaboul.

The fee for the central defender is understood to be £5 million and will be a massive boost for cash-strapped Pompey.

The Premier League's bottom team have been struggling to pay off debts but had their transfer embargo lifted last week.

The club were reportedly waiting for the proceeds of Kaboul's transfer to Tottenham to clear before they could pay the monthly wage bill at Fratton Park.

The move means the 24-year-old Frenchman will rejoin the club he left for Fratton Park in August 2008. Kaboul played 29 games and scored four goals during his previous spell at White Hart Lane, having originally joined from Auxerre in July 2007.

He rejected the chance to join Sunderland in the summer of 2008 in favour of his switch to the south coast club.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City have confirmed that they are no longer in the hunt for Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko after seeing an offer - reported to be £10 million - turned down by the club.

"It looks like we are not going to get the trophy signing we thought we might," said Birmingham manager Alex McLeish. "But I think we have offered enough. We may now try and get a trophy signing on loan with a view to a permanent deal in the summer. We are in a position where we don't need to break the bank with Carson Yeung's money.''
