Gold Coast United defeated A-League leaders Melbourne Victory 1-0 in a fiery encounter at Skilled Park on Friday to go second in the standings only on goal difference.
Zenan Caravella's goal 14 minutes before the end was enough to secure a deserved win for the hosts, who are now unbeaten in seven games at home.
The Victory were without striker Archie Thompson due to an ankle injury and his absence in the forward line clearly dampened their tenacity as they struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Gold Coast, meanwhile, attacked from the start and came close after just two minutes when Caravella's shot was tipped over the bar by Mitch Langerak.
Shane Smeltz saw a rasping free-kick whistle just wide of the post early in the second half before United skipper Jason Culina's powerful drive was well saved by goalkeeper Mitch Langerak.
But the hosts finally got the goal they deserved when Caravella smashed home from the edge of the area in the 76th minute to secure the three points.
