Fernandes aiming to impress Queiroz

Valencia midfielder Manuel Fernandes has confirmed his intention to leave the club in the hope of making the Portugal squad for the 2010 World Cup.

Fernandes, 23, says that he needs to play more regularly for the remainder of the season if he is to receive his "dream" call-up to Carlos Queiroz's 23-man squad for the finals in South Africa.

"My intention is to leave Valencia. It will be difficult to return to Benfica but I would contemplate returning to Portuguese football," he is quoted as saying by Super Deporte.

"I'm not playing as regularly as I intended at Valencia and I have a dream of being called to play at the World Cup with the national team. We will have to see what happens this week and if it is good for me and the club."

Fernandes, who has been on loan at Portsmouth and Everton in the past, has been linked with a move to Sporting CP, although Valencia are reportedly keen to keep him.
