Ex-CFA head under investigation over match-fixing

The former head of the Chinese Football Association (CFA) has been placed under "criminal investigation" in the probe into match-fixing in domestic football, state media reported citing public security officials.

Nan Yong, who was responsible for organising the 2007 women's World Cup in China, was taken away for questioning with two CFA colleagues last week and subsequently sacked.

Wednesday's move means he must be arrested or released within 14 days.

More than 20 officials, players and club managers have been arrested or detained in the past two months on suspicion of matchfixing or gambling, which is illegal in China.

Local media reported on Monday that all senior and middle level CFA officials had been ordered not to leave Beijing until the investigation had been completed.

Chinese soccer has long been regarded as a national disgrace, a mire of corruption, violence, poor play and dwindling crowds.
