Premier League duo target Gers striker Boyd

Aston Villa have joined the race to sign record-breaking Rangers striker Kris Boyd and will go head to head with Midlands rivals Birmingham City to land the Scotland international.

The 26-year-old, who surpassed Henrik Larsson's 158-goal Scottish Premier League record in December, is currently out injured following a hernia operation and will not be back in action until mid February.

According to the Scottish Sun, the SPL top goalscorer travelled to Birmingham on Wednesday to hold talks with Villa boss Martin O'Neill before taking in their 6-4 win over Blackburn Rovers in the Carling Cup.

Any deal is expected to be completed in the summer, when Boyd's current contract with Rangers expires.

However, Villa signed Stewart Downing from Middlesbrough in August last year despite the England winger being sidelined with an ankle injury until November and O'Neill might be eager to broker a similar deal.
