Burnley hopeful over Nimani and Nugent deals
Burnley boss Brian Laws is confident of tying up a deal for French forward Frederic Nimani by the end of the week.
Burnley are currently in talks with Monaco about taking the 21-year-old on loan until the end of the season. Nimani would become Laws' first signing since taking over at Turf Moor earlier this month and the manager confirmed on Thursday that the transfer was almost complete.
"He is a player that we are talking to and we are hoping to try and do something over the next 24 hours," Laws said. "We've had talks with (Monaco) and he's trained with us.
"The thing that is important is to get things right first before we start saying we have got this player or that player, but we are tapping into a lot of players and he's one of them. We are very confident that things can be worked out but, until everything is signed and sealed, that's as much as I can give."
Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Lee Grant is another name that has been linked with Burnley but Laws - who managed Grant at Hillsborough - insisted talk of a move for the player was nothing more than speculation for the time being.
"The majority will put two and two together because I've worked with him and he's a good goalkeeper," Laws said. "Obviously people speculate and we can't stop that. He's quite clearly a very good goalkeeper and he's got a bright future ahead of him but there's certainly nothing in it at the moment."
As well as bringing new players in, Laws has also been trying to extend David Nugent's stay at the club on loan from Portsmouth to the end of the season.
Nugent, whose present deal comes to an end on February 22, has indicated his desire to remain at Turf Moor but Laws admitted progress had been slow with Pompey due to their ongoing financial crisis.
"It's been difficult with the problems they are having there and it seems not to be a priority to them," Laws said. "But the one thing they are making very clear is that they are looking to sell - they obviously want players out so they can bring in money quickly.
"David Nugent is one of those players that they want to sell, and what we feel is good for us is that we have got David loving every minute of being here and he is in control of the situation, nobody else. It gives me comfort that he is in control and can't be forced to do anything he doesn't want."
