David James' Stoke switch to be resurrected?

David James' transfer to Stoke might be back on again after the two clubs resumed talks.

The deal was on, then off, and might now be back on, as negotiations continue over the complex equation being presented by Stoke on how to pay the England keeper's lavish £2 million a year wages, even though it would only be for half the season.

Originally Stoke suggested the wages were part paid by Pompey, and would be scaled according to appearances, and the killer blow was Stoke's insistence that the wages would only be paid up until the end of the season in May, and not when the contract expired at the end of June.

Stoke have re-opened discussions on how best to resolve the huge differences between the two clubs. A Pompey insider told Soccernet on Wednesday: "Talks have resumed with Stoke over James, so who knows what might happen there?"

James is a free agent in the summer when his contract expires, and Pompey are not asking for a fee should James go now, and it would help take a little pressure off their monthly wage bill, which has been late three times already this season.
