Rangers' Mendes reiterates desire to join Sporting

Pedro Mendes has reiterated his willingness to quit Rangers for Sporting Lisbon.

Sporting expressed an interest in the Portuguese midfielder earlier this month amid reports he could be sold to finance a new contract for Kris Boyd and Mendes, 30, revealed at the time he would be happy to be sacrificed to help out cash-strapped Rangers.

Manager Walter Smith responded to the speculation by claiming he was unaware of any plans to offload the player, who joined the club in the summer of 2008 and has 18 months left on his contract. But reports emanating from Portugal this week say a bid of around £1.3 million has already been agreed with Sporting.

Mendes, who recently returned to full training following a knee injury that has kept him out since October, said in the Scottish Sun: ''I am awaiting news on what might happen.

''It would be difficult to reject a move to Sporting because I am Portuguese and this move could have a big influence on my family life.''
