FA Cup: Portsmouth and Birmingham edge through

Coventry were cruelly denied in their FA Cup third round replay against Portsmouth as the Premier League side scored late goals in normal time and extra-time to clinch a 2-1 win at the Ricoh Arena.

Coventry looked to be heading for a deserved win after Leon Best gave them the lead with a stunning volley in the 22nd minute, but they were left devastated when captain Stephen Wright headed into his own goal as the game approached injury time.

There was a further cruel blow for Coventry as, with a penalty shoot-out looming, Aaron Mokoena rose unmarked to head home a corner in stoppage time at the end of extra-time.

Birmingham City ended Nottingham Forest's 18-match unbeaten run as they secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at St Andrew's.

With neither side having been able to score at the City Ground, it took Barry Ferguson's first goal for Birmingham in the 62nd minute to see off the Championship promotion hopefuls.

Sheffield United managed to hang on for a 3-2 win at QPR after coming close to throwing away a three-goal lead.

The Blades looked to be cruising as goals from Lee Williamson, Jamie Ward and Richard Cresswell saw them 3-0 up on 70 minutes, but Akos Buzsaky pulled one back from the penalty spot moments later before Damion Stewart headed home two minutes from time to make for a tense finish.

Championship strugglers Derby endured another difficult match at Pride Park but came out on top as they saw off League One Millwall on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock in normal time, but Steve Morison put Millwall ahead on 108 minutes before Steve Davies lobbed the ball into the net eight minutes later to rescue the Rams. Derby then won the shoot-out 5-3 to ease the pressure on the side.

Bristol City and Cardiff face a replay at the Cardiff City Stadium after they drew 1-1 at Ashton Gate.

Having seen their original tie postponed due to the weather, it appeared Michael Chopra had put Cardiff through as he scored his first goal since September in the 76th minute. However, substitute Gavin Williams kept the Robins in the competition with a 90th-minute equaliser.
