Ferguson escapes action over Clattenburg comments

The FA has confirmed that no action will be taken against Sir Alex Ferguson following his criticism of referee Mark Clattenburg at the weekend.

Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at Birmingham on Saturday and nearly saw their equaliser - a Scott Dann own goal - ruled out for offside before Darren Fletcher was dismissed for two yellow cards.

After the match, Ferguson told ESPN: ''I've not seen a softer sending-off for a long time. It's absolutely ridiculous, really. I've been watching Mark Clattenburg this season.

"He did the Arsenal-Tottenham game - you had to have someone hit with an axe before he'd book anyone in that game, and he sends a player off here.

''There were some wonderful and weird decisions out there. The linesman gives offside for our goal - it's an own goal, and he gives offside! Anyway, we carry on.''

Ferguson is facing a suspended two-match ban as part of his punishment for criticising Alan Wiley's fitness after the 2-2 draw with Sunderland at Old Trafford this season, but the FA has confirmed he will not be punished further over his latest remarks.

"No action will be taken in relation to Sir Alex Ferguson," a spokesman said.
