Celtic defender Caldwell to reject Boro for Wigan?

Celtic defender Gary Caldwell has reportedly rejected the chance to join up with former boss Gordon Strachan at Middlesbrough and will sign for Wigan instead.

Strachan is currently lining up moves for three of his former players, Barry Robson, Willo Flood and Chris Killen and had a £2 million bid for Caldwell accepted on Monday night. However, the defender reportedly wants to play in the Premier League and Wigan have now stolen a march on their rivals according to STV.

Celtic have already moved to replace Caldwell - who is also out of contract at the end of the season - by signing Dutch defender Jos Hooiveld from Swedish club AIK for £2 million.

Boro may now turn to other targets, but should push through deals for the other three players - at least until at least the end of the season.

The Championship club are struggling to reach the play-off spots this season after relegation from the Premier League last campaign and Strachan is keen to bring in leaders to the club.

"We're trying hard to bring in people who can lead," said Strachan of his planned swoop for his four former players. "I want to bring in leaders and men - that's hugely important now. I have to have people who I know, players I know who are men, who are leaders, and who know about playing at this level."
