Mainz have signed Real Madrid forward Adam Szalai on loan until the end of the season.
The Hungarian, who will strengthen the Bundesliga side ahead of the second half of the season, has yet to make his first-team debut for the Primera Division giants and has spent much of his two years at the playing for the reserves.
"He is just the player we wanted in attack," Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel said. "He is versatile and can play as a target man, as a second striker or even behind the forwards."
Tuchel has worked with Szalai in the past, having coached him when he was in charge of Stuttgart's youth team in 2004 after the player joined the Swabians from Ujpest Budapest. Szalai then moved to Madrid, but is happy to be back in the Bundesliga.
"I have chosen Mainz because the club really tried hard to get me and I know the coach Thomas Tuchel from when I was at Stuttgart," he said on the club's website. "I also see good perspectives for me and the club."
