La Liga: Sevilla slip up, Atletico forget Cup woes

Sevilla slipped up at home for the fourth time in a row in the Primera Division as Manolo Jimenez's men fell to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Racing Santander.

Young striker Sergio Canales was the hero for a revitalised Racing, hitting both goals as the Cantabrians secured a fourth win in five games under new coach Miguel Angel Portugal.

But it was another disappointment for Sevilla, who had picked up just two points from their last three home league matches and were unable to get back into this one, despite Ndri Romaric's strike on the hour.

The locals rallied late on, but were unable to find an equaliser and saw their fading championship hopes all but extinguished following another miserable evening.

Atletico Madrid put their embarrassing midweek King's Cup first leg defeat behind them to crush Real Valladolid 4-0 in La Liga on Saturday.

Coach Quique Sanchez Flores criticised his team's attitude after they fell 3-0 at second division strugglers Recreativo Huelva on Wednesday and they responded with a vastly-improved display in Valladolid.

Jurado put away a Jose Antonio Reyes lay-off after 16 minutes and Diego Forlan rounded the keeper to double the lead in the 32nd.

Reyes capped an industrious performance with a superb volley from outside the area after the break and substitute Sergio Aguero returned from a month out injured to score the fourth at the end, leaving Atletico 11th with 20 points.

Villarreal, meanwhile, were held to a 1-1 draw by Almeria, with Corona's second-half penalty cancelling out Nilmar's 40th minute header.

Villarreal are ninth with 23 points. Atletico are 11th with 20, one ahead of Racing in 12th.
