Liverpool line up Maxi, but may be limited to loans

Maxi Rodriguez's agent has confirmed Liverpool are in talks to sign the Atletico Madrid winger, but there are reports that Rafa Benitez will not be given the money he raises in selling players.

• Birmingham move for Babel

Liverpool have lined up a move for Rodriguez as his current contract is due to expire in the summer and his representative, Jose Segui, has confirmed a deal is close after rejecting speculation in Italy that Juventus had entered the race.

"We are working. It's true we have spoken [with Liverpool], but there is nothing definitive," Segui told calciomercato.it. "Juventus ? We have spoken with Liverpool and other sides, but never with Juventus.

"As for Liverpool, I don't know when the negotiation could be closed. It's up to the two clubs and to their decision. Anyway it would be a permanent transfer."

However, it appears that Benitez is set to be limited to signing just one new player on loan in addition to the £1.5 million spent on Rodriguez and won't get any cash from outgoings.

It is understood that Napoli have agreed a £4.5 million deal to sign Andrea Dossena, Andriy Voronin is close to signing for Dynamo Moscow in a £2 million deal, while another £2 million will be received when Philipp Degen moves on. Ryan Babel, meanwhile, could move to Birmingham if they can come up with the £12 million Liverpool want.

Even with player sales, Liverpool's executives are reported to hold the belief that players bought in the January transfer window are habitually overpriced and that the club would rather save the income from sales to build a war chest for the summer.
