Dave Kitson eyes Celtic switch

Stoke City striker Dave Kitson has welcomed suggestions that he could be a loan target for Celtic in the January transfer window.

• On The Move: Live transfer blog

Kitson, 29, has failed to impress at the Britannia Stadium following a £5.5 million move from Reading in the summer of 2008 and recently completed a loan spell with Middlesbrough during which he scored three goals in six Championship appearances.

Working under former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has only reinforced Kitson's belief that he would jump at the chance to join the SPL side should Tony Mowbray make a bid during this month.

"Celtic is a club that I have always admired and hoped to get the chance to play for them at some point," Kitson said. "I have just come back from being on loan at Middlesbrough, where Gordon Strachan is the manager, and he only has fantastic things to say about Celtic, including how unbelievable the fans are.

"Obviously Stoke would need to be happy with any deal, but moving to Celtic would be a great opportunity. I am at a critical point in my career when I should be at my peak and I need to be playing. And, unfortunately, it doesn't look like I'm going to play too much at Stoke."

Kitson has scored just two goals in 25 Premier League appearances for Stoke and last season returned to former club Reading on loan.

But Celtic striker Scott McDonald has no desire to leave Parkhead, according to his agent.

"I speak to Scott every day, and, as far as I am concerned, he wants to be at Celtic,'' Lou Sticca told the Evening Times. "I have also spoken regularly to Peter Lawwell, and he has told me that Celtic are happy with Scott.

"If anything does happen, it will be Celtic telling Scott to leave, not Scott asking to go. What we are seeing here is the usual reaction in the media if a club's top scorer is not playing. Scott is doing the business for Celtic, as his goals show.''

• Championship side Sheffield United have completed the signing of Richard Cresswell following the Stoke striker's successful loan spell at Bramall Lane.

The former England Under-21 international, who was a key figure in helping the Potters gain promotion to the Premier League two seasons ago, has completed the move for an undisclosed fee after joining the Blades earlier in the season.

"Richard did a fantastic job for this club and I am delighted that things have worked out well for him at Bramall Lane,'' said Stoke manager Tony Pulis.

Cresswell has scored three goals in nine appearances for United and is aiming to help Kevin Blackwell's men return to the Premier League.

"This club is geared to the Premier League,'' the former Sheffield Wednesday frontman told Stoke's website: "I am sure we can mount a strong challenge for promotion in the second half of the season.

"We are still in contention despite all the injuries we had before Christmas, but they have all cleared up now and we are ready to push on.

"I will never forget the wonderful time I had at Stoke and I was delighted to play a key role in helping them to get where they are today.''
