Toni delighted to be returned to Serie A

Luca Toni is "extremely happy" to have completed his loan move to Roma from Bayern Munich and has vowed to start immediately proving his worth for the Serie A club.

Toni will spend the rest of the season with Roma, where he has been handed the number 30 shirt, with the Giallorossi paying him 3.1million euros for the duration of his stay.

Roma will then have the option to buy the striker outright and Toni is eager to do everything possible to prove to new boss Claudio Ranieri that he is worth signing on a full-time basis.

"I'm extremely happy to be here," said Toni as he was officially unveiled as a Roma player this afternoon. "It's the club that I always wanted.

"I'm delighted and I will try to help the coach and all the squad achieve our goals. I have great motivations, as soon as I heard that Roma wanted me I accepted immediately. I'm up for the challenge, it won't be easy but we'll see what happens. I have six months to show that I am a Roma player. I have to score goals. I will try to deserve my place because there are already great attackers at Roma."

The move sees Toni reunited with Francesco Totti, his strike partner in Italy's 2006 World Cup winning side. And Toni admits the Roma captain had a major part to play in his desire to join the capital club.

He added: "Around me I felt so much affection from the sporting director (Daniele) Prade, the president Rosella Sensi, from Francesco Totti, (Simone) Perrotta, (Daniele) De Rossi. I am their friend and I have shared so many emotions with them in the national side. Feeling their affection made the choice a lot easier. I chose Roma because I really liked the idea of playing with Totti as well as the drive that a city and a set of fans like Roma's give you."

Toni, who shot to fame in the 2005/06 season when he scored 31 goals for Fiorentina to earn the European Golden Shoe award, moved to Bayern in 2007 and hit the ground running with 24 goals in his first campaign in the Bundesliga, earning him the league's top-goalscorer prize.

He added a further 14 goals last year, helping Bayern finish second in the Bundesliga, but matters have turned sour this season.

Toni, who has struggled with injuries recently, has failed to find the back of the net in just four appearances and has fallen out with coach Louis van Gaal. The 32-year-old admits a return to Bayern would be difficult.

"I have a splendid relation with the Bayern directors who understood my desire to come to Roma," said Toni. "I had problems with Van Gaal but anyway that's in the past and I don't want to talk about it any more. I'll talk about it again in June if I am still at Roma, but I have to prove myself. Before anything I want to earn my place and score a lot of goals for the fans and my team-mates. Physically I'm fine, the injury is now just a memory."

Toni will also be aiming to revive his hopes of playing for Italy at this summer's World Cup. However, he insists that is not the sole reason for his decision to return to Italy. "I didn't come to Roma just for the World Cup," he said. "Now my aim is to score a lot of goals and play well in the Giallorossi shirt. Then we will see what happens in June."
