Injury adds to woes of suspended Javier Mascherano

Javier Mascherano will spend his enforced absence due to suspension recovering from a knee injury after Liverpool confirmed the midfielder will be laid low for up to three weeks.

Mascherano was shown a red card for a challenge on Tal Ben Haim in Liverpool's 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth at the weekend but suffered an injury in the incident.

Given it was his second dismissal of the season, Mascherano will now be suspended for the upcoming games against Wolves, Aston Villa, the FA Cup third round tie at Reading and the league clash with Tottenham on January 10.

In all likelihood, Mascherano would have been absent for this period anyway after Liverpool confirmed the nature of his knee problem.

"The player had a scan which confirmed the medical team's initial diagnosis that he suffered a medial ligament sprain in his left knee,'' a club spokesman told the club's official website. "He is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks.''
