Hoeness set to return to football with Wolfsburg

Dieter Hoeness is preparing to make his return to football by becoming the new general manager of Wolfsburg, according to reports.

The 56-year-old has been keeping a low profile since being ousted as manager of Hertha Berlin in June, but several reports in Germany have claimed that he is to be appointed as Wolfsburg's new general manager in the next few days.

Armin Veh is currently fulfilling that role alongside his day-to-day duties as head coach, but after a difficult first half of the season, the club seem to want to spread the responsibility and allow Veh to concentrate on coaching the first team.

According to both Kicker magazine and the Welt newspaper, Hoeness is the man to share the load and will begin work with the defending German champions in mid-January.

Wolfsburg lie in eighth position at the midway stage of the season, 11 points adrift of league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

They were one position worse off at the same stage of last season before Felix Magath, who successfully mastered the dual coaching and managerial role, guided them to their first ever Bundesliga title.
